Stairs and Handrails
Quartersawn White Oak stair and handrail system incorporating the classic Japanese shoji and kimono-makers Asanoha pattern. This delicate looking structure is sturdy enough to easily withstand the onslaught of large pets and small children. |
Treads, risers posts and balusters are all made of solid quartersawn white oak, a classic American hardwood from colonial times onward. Strength, stability and beauty characterize items made from this wood. Stickley used it exclusively in his Mission Style oak furniture. |
|
For handrails that do not touch the floor, a strong top and bottom rail is milled to receive the narrow tongues of both balusters and fillet. When glued under pressure this type of joinery forms a deep and secure bond between vertical and horizontal elements without the use of metal connectors. |
